Lindsey Pine is a culinary-driven dietitian who has a passion for food but isn’t motivated by food trends. Her website, Tasty Balance Nutrition, showcases food that not only makes you feel good, but tastes good, too!

Lindsey loves beans because they are versatile and add so much nutrition and deliciousness to dishes. She even wrote a continuing education article for Today’s Dietitian CE Learning Library titled The Health Benefits of Beans!

She says each little bean contains nutrients such as fiber, protein, B vitamins, potassium, and even bioactive phytonutrients, just to name a few. We often hear about phytonutrients in vegetables and fruits, but beans contain them as well.

“Not only are beans fantastic in savory creations like stews, soups, casseroles, side dishes, hummus-style dips and salads, but you can even use them in sweet applications,” she says. She suggests adding pureed beans to brownies, smoothies or even a sweet chocolate hummus-style dip.

Lindsey says eating 1/2 cup of beans a day is a great healthy habit. She always recommends soaking dried beans before cooking in order to remove as many gas-promoting factors as possible. She suggests spacing them throughout the day if 1/2 cup in one sitting is too much.

Lindsey tells her clients to eat whole foods whenever possible, savor treats, have fun with their fitness regimens, take “me time,” and don’t unnecessarily eliminate entire food groups.

She breaks it down into a simple equation: Eat well + move a lot + be kind to yourself = feel great!
