Autumn is in the air and the tempting candy for Halloween is in stores. Is your front door ready for the little witches, goblins and ghosts that will be trick-or-treating at your house? I was looking for inspiration for a front door decoration that was creative but not super expensive. I spied a Halloween edition of Better Homes and Gardens at the store that I thought would have what I needed. And low and behold, page 101 had just what I was looking for! Something made with beans! It is called Remains of the Day and is made out of black foam board that you can purchase at a hobby store or the dollar store. Use your imagination to decorate the urn. I stayed pretty much to the design in the magazine. Have fun!

suppliesSupplies:

Black foam board

White craft paper or newspaper

Pencil

Scissors

X-acto knife or something similar

Glue

Dry beans (I use large and baby limas, navy beans and black beans)

Artificial flowers

Plastic spider or other decoration

Ribbon

Directions:

draw urn

The first thing I did was fold the paper in half and draw 1/2 the urn on the paper.

cut out urn

Then I cut out the shape of the urn. I laid it flat on the foam board and used a pencil to outline the shape.

I carefully cut out the shape with an X-acto knife. Be VERY careful and don’t cut it out on a table or counter that you might cut through. Watch out for your fingers!

start glueing beans

starting to glue on the beans.

keep going!

Almost done!

After the shape is cut out I drew the design on the board, then went to work gluing the beans on. Make sure you let the beans set before you stand it up or the beans will slide right off. (Trust me, I know!) Let it dry for several hours. Test one of the beans to make sure it’s glued down.

wire spider

I used a small Phillips screwdriver to poke two holes, one on each side about 2 inches from the top, for the ribbon. I also poked a couple of holes on the urn for the spider. I used a small wire to wire the spider to the urn and twisted the wire on the backside of the urn.

Laying the urn bean-side down on a table, I taped the flowers to the top of the urn.

Happy Hallobean!

I think it turned out really well and it looks great on my door! You could also add some fake spider webs to the flowers or the urn to give it a spookier look!

Happy Hallobean!
