Yvette Marquez, the founder of the tantalizing website Muy Bueno, grew up eating pinto beans as part of her family’s homestyle Mexican cooking.
“I love black beans, too,” she says. “They’re affordable, filling, and a great source of protein and fiber.”
And, based on the pictures on Yvette’s website, they’re also wildly photogenic — just browsing through her recipe photos is enough to make your mouth water.
Yvette started Muy Bueno in 2010 to share her journey of writing a cookbook, but it quickly evolved into more than a side project.
“I am now a full-time blogger, recipe developer, stylist/photographer, on-camera host, and author of the books ‘Muy Bueno: Three Generations of Authentic Mexican Flavor’ and ‘Latin Twist: Traditional and Modern Cocktails,’” she says.
This native Texan lives in Colorado now, where she teaches her two children the recipes she learned at the knees of her mom, Vangie, and her grandmother, Jesusita. “It wasn’t until my grandmother passed away in 2004, at the age of 98, that I realized just how passionate I really was about keeping my culture alive in my own family.”
Now she cooks to keep her family recipes alive. One of those recipes is for traditional frijoles charros, or cowboy beans, a Northern Mexican dish popular at summer cookouts.
“It is the ideal potluck or cookout dish to make,” she says. “It’s inexpensive, easy to make, and extremely delicious.”
