Whether you call them garbanzos or chickpeas or just know them as something you add to your salad at the salad bar, these little round legumes are a versatile favorite throughout the world.
Garbanzo beans originated around 7,500 years ago in the Middle East and have been cultivated since 3000 B.C. in the Mediterranean area. In California, garbanzo acreage has fluctuated between 6,000 and 12,000 acres for the last several years. Most garbs are grown in the Coastal foothills, the Central and Southern San Joaquin Valley, and the Sacramento Valley.
