Bland veggie burgers are a thing of the past! These days, veggie burgers can be made with any number of grains and veggies—but our clear favorite is the use of beans. Featured food blogger Stephanie McKercher, also known as the GratefulGrazer, shared some invaluable tips about how to whip up your own bean burgers right at home.
“Beans are one of my favorite ingredients, so I always have a variety of dry and canned options in my kitchen,” Stephanie said. “I wanted to create a plant-based recipe that’d be ideal for weeknight dinners and summer cookouts. I’ve tried some really amazing bean burgers at restaurants, and I wanted a recipe I could recreate in my own home.”
Beans are packed with protein, antioxidants, and fiber. And when it comes to beans, Stephanie definitely has her preferences.
“Pulses are so versatile!” Stephanie said. “I love black beans for tacos and Mexican-inspired recipes. I also like to roast chickpeas until they’re crispy. They’re delicious on their own as a snack, but I also love to add them to salads for a satisfying crunch.”
You can add herbs and spices to your bean burgers to amp up the flavor. They taste great, provide long-lasting energy, and are so easy to throw together! Just mash all the ingredients together in a bowl, then use your hands to form the mixture into round burger patties. From there, you can grill or cook just like a regular hamburger.
If you’re having trouble making your bean burgers stick together, try adding more binding ingredients such as grains, tomato paste, or beaten eggs. It also helps to squeeze the water out of any vegetables you’re using, since excess liquid can cause the patties to fall apart.
